Four Flags
summer 2020
De Pont will be the first Dutch museum to show, throughout the summer of 2020, a series of flags from the project Four Flags, initiated by the two Amsterdam curators Julia Mullié and Nick Terra in April 2020. Every week they will introduce a new flag and thereby allow a total of thirty artists, invited by them, to reflect on the lockdown period and on the social, artistic and political impact of the current Covid-19 crisis.
De Pont was delighted by the donation of twelve flags made by European and Latin American artists, among them Ola Vasiljeva (Latvia), Daniel de Paula (Brazil), Antonio Caro (Colombia), Jennifer Tee (the Netherlands) and Willem de Rooij (the Netherlands). The curators are presenting the flags on the exterior wall of their own house in Amsterdam and then selling small editions of them to art lovers via Instagram (@fourflags2020). The project was conceived as a means of support for visual artists; profits will benefit them alone.
Meanwhile, the Amsterdam initiative has grown into a worldwide project. Brazilian, German, Colombian and American art institutions have joined in and recently began collaborating with local artists to produce thirty flags under the auspices of the Amsterdam curators. Every week, a different flag from the donated group will be hung above the new (temporary) entrance to the De Pont Museum. As a salute to art, artists and artistic imagination in this time of a pandemic.
