Summer at De Pont

collection

6 August - 28 August

Prior to our extensive solo exhibition by the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, the summer offers an opportunity to have a fresh look at De Pont's collection. On view during this period are sculptures, paintings and works on paper by Berlinde De BruyckereKatharina GrosseAnn Veronica JanssensGuido GeelenRob Birza and Reinoud van Vught. Also being shown is recent work by Marc Mulders and Fiona Banner which, intentionally or unintentionally, reflects the unstable world order of this moment.

Marc Mulders
In addition to other works by Mulders, the recently acquired monumental painting Hunt for Paradise (Hope) 19.09.20 (2020) will be exhibited for the first time. This canvas is part of a striking series in his oeuvre where ominous black forms bring tension to the paradisal atmosphere and create a fusion, as it were, of 'bloom' and 'doom'.
The work came about during the pandemic, when Mulders discovered that contaminated soil was being illegally dumped on the Oostelbeers country estate where he lives and works. Now, two years later, the painting more generally became a symbol of the current criseses in the world. It is being shown with three preparatory sketches and in relation to earlier work from the collection.
