Dan Graham

Dan Graham makes most of his three-dimensional works with industrial materials, such as stainless steel and two-way mirrored glass. These constructions are a hybrid form of visual art and architecture. Light reflected off the glass, as well as the changing reflections of people and things surrounding the work, determine their ever-changing character. They appear to be solid and, at the same time, dissolve in their environment. The use of two-way mirror glass articulates a critical approach to architecture. In modern architecture mirrored facades act as impenetrable shields that keep out unwanted gazes. Graham's pavilions give the viewer, on the contrary, an active role and confront him, often in an illusory manner, with himself and his immediate surroundings.
