Hermann Nitsch (Vienna,1938) is one of the most important representatives of the Viennese Actionists. Since 1971 Nitsch regularly organizes performances of the Orgien Mysterien Theater (which roughly translates as "Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries"). Nitsch is strongly influenced by writers like Marquis De Sade, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud and Antonin Artaud. Prominent in his work is the underlying belief that visual art - and perhaps art in general – has a ceremonial origin. Nitsch’s work is also rooted in a social and cultural reality that for today’s artists and art lovers remain actual and meaningful. It deals with the need of artistic activity. His work is seen by a diverse and new generation of artists as an inspiration for their own work. His distinct work still causes a meaningful discourse on bourgeois morality, the social position of art and the concept of artistic freedom in general. The Incubate festival in Tilburg, which took place between 13 and 20 September, presented a large number of Nitsch related activities: a performance, exhibitions, a concert, a film screening, a master class and lectures in different locations in Tilburg. The exhibiton of his paintings at De Pont forms part of the Festival as well.
