Richard Long is a major figure with respect to Land Art: a movement associated withartists who, since the 1960s, have realized their work outdoors, with natural materials from the surroundings. Long's work is always based on a simple geometric form: the circle, the line, the spiral or the cross – minimal forms that stand out in the landscape because they have been produced by human hands. All of the works are photographed by Long, and these photographs are shown in galleries and museums.
He also brings his works into the museum in other ways, by arranging the stones or branches gathered in nature into clearly defined strips or circles. For these he sometimes uses natural materials that can be purchased, such as the coal from Bolivia in this Bolivian Coal Line.
